About Us

Yukon Legal Services Society (YLSS) is Yukon’s legal aid service provider. If you need a lawyer but cannot afford to pay, we may be able to help by providing a lawyer at no cost or at a very low cost to you.

We are here to provide accessible, cost effective and professional legal services in criminal, family, child protection, mental health, and poverty law to eligible people throughout the Yukon.  YLSS employs staff lawyers who work at four separate law offices and work with partners in the justice system to improve access to justice. For a list of clinics and lawyers, see our offices, hours, and contacts.

Although most of our services are based on financial eligibility, some are available to all Yukoners:

  • Advice at court from a Duty Counsel lawyer if you’ve been charged or detained.
  • Advice over the telephone if you are under arrest and in police custody.
  •  Summary advice at Family Court.

Yukon Legal Services Society is a non-profit publicly funded institution. It operates at arm’s length from the government to ensure a balanced and impartial system of justice for Yukoners.  Yukon Legal Services Society operates under the framework of the Legal Services Society Act, R.S.Y. 2002, c. 135  and Legal Aid Regulation, O.I.C 1987/70.
