Client Service Coordinator, Criminal Law

We are looking for a client services coordinator (“CSC”). The CSC may have the opportunity to work out of a new office dedicated to improving criminal law services for vulnerable and disadvantaged populations. The main purpose of the role is to coordinate appropriate supports that will help people navigate their legal matter based on their unique needs.

Although this is a new position and the role may change over time, these are the main duties we envision the incumbent being responsible for:

Communication

    • Building and nurturing relationships with the people we serve and justice support workers
    • Maintaining regular communication, timely problem solving and following through on commitments
    • Supporting legal aid counsel and other justice workers in meeting the wide-ranging needs of our clients
    • Attending regular in-person meetings

Client Support

    • Assisting with court preparation, trial preparation, employment, housing or family or mental health support and advocacy
    • Working with individuals who are preparing for release from custody
    • Working with court workers and legal aid counsel to identify people who may benefit from a Gladue report or restorative justice options
    • Preparing reintegration plans with related Yukon First Nations, parole officers, Whitehorse Correctional Centre Case Managers, Community Justice Workers and non-governmental organizations
    • Communicating with legal aid counsel for the purpose of advocating for clients while they are subject to court orders in criminal court

Administration

    • Making entries in the legal aid database for the purpose of tracking statistics required by funders, e.g., tracking time based on activities
    • Preparing and maintaining policy and process materials for this position and other support positions involved with legal aid’s criminal matters
    • Working with legal aid’s intake manager to monitor and manage file loads and conflicts
    • Maintaining confidential records for personal caseload
    • Collecting and analyzing client feedback to ensure legal aid is meeting needs and expectations
    • Developing innovative ways to improve services

Requirements

Criminal Records Check (with Vulnerability Sector)

Class 5 Driver’s License

 

Education

Bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field such as sociology or phycology or equivalency obtained through course work and/or work experience.

 

Experience

Experience in a client support role that served vulnerable and/or disadvantaged populations.

Prior experience working in the justice system will be considered an asset.

Familiar with Yukon support agencies and organizations.
